Rendering Tallow
The better your tallow, the better your soap. Try to use the best fats possible. Using regular fat trimmings can be done but results in a lower quality soap. The grocery store is a great source to find beef suet for tallow.
If all this seems too much...you can buy rendered tallow from food supply
companies.
Required Items
 | 3-5 lbs. suet or other meat fat
 | water
 | 2-4 tbls. salt
 | sharp knife
 | large pot
 | long handled wooden spoon
 | safety goggles
 | rubber gloves
 | wood or stainless ladle
 | colander
 | primary mold
Steps to Follow
- Cut or grind the suet into the smallest pieces possible. This will make it melt more easily.
- Place ground suet into a pot. Make sure there is room for expansion as it heats.
- Add 3 inches of water to pot. At this point, add the salt.
- Set mixture over medium high heat and put on safety gear.
- Stir mixture as it heats. Melt the suet into as much liquid as possible.
- Allow a slow boil only. Mash the small pieces with the spoon. This could take up to two hours, depending on how much fat and how small the pieces.
- Once the suet is liquified, remove from heat. Pour or ladle it into a sieve or colander to remove any meat, sinew, or gristle. Mix the strained solids with peanut butter and put out for the birds.
- Fill your primary mold with the strained mixture and refridgerate overnight.
- Remove mold from fridge and turn upside down in the sink. Allow any extra water to drain away.
- You now have a block of tallow. Refridgerate or freeze until you are ready to make a batch of basic soap.
